It was an inter-school science exhibition competition held in Gulf Medical University, Ajman. My project won two awards. GMU felt my contribution was very good. I had prepared a simple Sustainable Living Model using Solar Energy, [ 'MASDAR City' in AbuDhabi was my example - a Sustainable living life style-100% on solar and other renewable energy; 0% carbon emission, 0% pollution, 100% waste management and natural cooling system. I Just like last year, this summer vacation also I won't go to Bangalore but I want to use these worksheets to study at school, residences and shopping malls etc to create awareness on how much one can save on electricity bill and how much one can reduce carbon emission. For instance, study on TV showrooms would help the owner to design some plan to display/switch on – TV sets only on weekends at a particular time instead of displaying all through the week, or just display upon customer's request. He may be reluctant initially, but awareness about carbon emission and by some volunteer program where his photo and his commitment to reduce carbon foot print is appreciated and published in the local news paper. have also highlighted the advantages of adopting water recycle and rain water harvesting]. Electricity generated here, is by combustion of fossil fuels which makes UAE one of the highest carbon emitting countries in the world. This electricity is very harmful to health. I have designed a ‘Saving Plan' where one can use renewable solar energy for their lighting and appliances at home, office and anywhere else. [Air-condition - they have to depend on SEWA/DEWA grids. But yesterday I saw a wonderful product on display in Zayed University, a Solar Air-conditioner!] So to the extent of lighting and appliances we could successfully cut down not only the cost but also the carbon emission. Simple Thermodynamics calculates the consumption of electricity of each of these appliances on the basis of their watts. This is aimed at not only raising awareness on electricity usage by each appliances but also tries to reason out if one needs so many appliances? Can one use physical energy instead of depending so much on appliances? Sustainability can be achieved only when we re-think of simple ways of living.
